As I read the paper today I begin to reflect on all the wonderful people I have moved into Riverbend Retirement Residence.  Each and every person is different, some needing more assiatance then others.  I reflect on the wonderful caring staff that I have worked closely with over the years and the compassionate care they provide.  The article I am reading talks about the employees going on strike.   Why do they deserve wages less then what provincially run facilities are paid?  I hope with all my heart that this is settled immediately as it is only our SENIORS that are suffering.

Here is a postive...

We hear so many negative things about how seniors residences are run and about the staff, well listen to this one....
The mother of a family I downsized into a long term care facility still wore her wedding rings.  They could not slip off her finger so there they stayed.  Upon a recent visit it was noted that one of the claws, holding the diamond, had been caught on something and the diamond was gone.  It had been 3 weeks and nothing had turned up.  I equate this to finding a needle in a haystack, the stone could be anywhere!  The family asked that the rings be removed as the open claws on the ring were very sharp and could harm someone.  When the rings were picked up there was a "diamond like" stone in the package.  The staff had found a stone but thought it was a rhinestone off someone's costume jewellry but put it in the envelope just in case.  Upon having a gem smith examine the stone it turns out the actual diamond had been found!
A HUGE thank you goes out to the very dedicated and loving staff at this facility.

How will you vote tomorrow?

The numbers are staggering!  I was reading an article written by Arlene Adamson from Calgary in the Edmonton Journal this morning.  Adamson states that Alberta's senior population is approximately 8 percent of the total.   Taking into account that just over 940,000 are too young to cast a ballot that leaves 2,265,000 elgible voters for Mondays election.....1 in 5 are Seniors!

She also states that over the next 25 years the population of Alberta's seniors is set to double.  Are you  thinking about the future when you vote tomorrow?  About ease of transportation as we age, about drug costs and access to health care systems, about the number of doctors being trained in gerontology...I am.

Do ONE thing right!

There are so many companies out there trying to be perfect at what they do.  How can a company do everything 100% when they are spreading themselves so thin by trying to take on so many tasks?  At Elder Move Inc. we specialize in downsizing and relocation....that is it.  We don't grocery shop, do laundry or drive people around.  We have made many business contacts over the years and are able to complete each and every job to the total satisfaction of our clients.  I am proud to be the owner of Elder Move Inc. and happy to see the faces of the newly relocated when they first open the door to their new home!

Seniors Week

Where did June go?  It must have washed away with all the rain we have had!

June 6-10 2011 was Seniors' Week in Alberta.  Many celebrations took place during that week.  We had a wonderful turnout for the  Edmonton Westend Seniors Fair, met many new faces and visited with some famaliar ones.  Congratulations to our Tim Hortons gift card winners (Helen M and Barbara M).

Elder  Move had a busy week as well with a radio interview on CBC Monday followed by a CTV noon news segment.  Look for us in the Finest Values book, up for delivery if Canada Post ever gets back to work.  We will have an article printed in the next copy of the Alberta Caregivers Magazine...take a look, July 2011.

Medicine Cabinets Downsizing

So....let's all think about what we have in our medicine cabinet... I just found a bottle of eye drops for a cat of mine that died 8 years ago.  OK..maybe my new cat will get sick but how likely is it that she will come down with exactly the same ailment?  I have worked in the veterinary business for years and this has never happened plus the drug is long past its expiry date.

These are the kind of things that Elder Move can help you part with, leaving more room for things you actually need, in the medicine cabinet or cupboard.
